Porto District sits in northern Portugal along the Douro River, with a mild Atlantic climate that keeps summers warm (70-80°F / 21-27°C) and winters cool but rarely freezing. It's famous for port wine, produced in the Douro Valley and aged in Vila Nova de Gaia's cellars-you can tour them any season, but winter visits mean fewer lines and cheaper tastings. In summer, hop on a river cruise to see the terraced vineyards and end with a beach day at Matosinhos or Foz do Douro; from June to September, the water is perfect for surfing off the Atlantic coast.
